Emergency Management Is More Than Storms: OEM Public Information Officer to Speak at March NSBA Luncheon

SPRINGFIELD, Mo. — The North Springfield Betterment Association (NSBA) will welcome Nicolette Zangara, Public Information Officer for the Springfield-Greene County Office of Emergency Management (OEM), as the guest speaker for its March Monthly Luncheon on Thursday, March 12.

Zangara will discuss how emergency management works year-round to help communities prepare for, respond to, and recover from emergencies — from severe weather and floods to large events and human-caused disruptions. Her presentation will break down the four core phases of emergency management: mitigation, preparedness, response, and recovery, and clarify the roles of local, state, and federal agencies during disasters.

“Emergency management isn’t just sirens and storms,” Zangara said. “It’s about reducing risk before something happens, helping people prepare, coordinating response during an emergency, and supporting recovery afterward. A prepared community is a safer, stronger community.”

Zangara joined the Springfield-Greene County Office of Emergency Management in May 2025 after spending eight years in broadcast meteorology. Her background includes work with the Florida Public Radio Emergency Network during Hurricane Irma, reporting and forecasting roles in Florida and Missouri, and three years at KY3 News in Springfield. She brings firsthand experience communicating critical information during high-impact weather events and public emergencies.

The luncheon will also emphasize a call to action for residents and businesses: check on neighbors, volunteer locally, stay prepared, and help share accurate information during emergencies.

The NSBA Monthly Luncheon will be held Thursday, March 12, from 11:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. at Cox North, Fountain Plaza Room, 1423 N. Jefferson Ave., Springfield, MO 65802. Networking begins at 11:30 a.m., lunch is served at 11:45 a.m., and the program begins promptly at noon. Lunch is $20, and the program is free and open to the public.
